Stepping Back to move Forward: The Art of Retreat and Reflection

In the fast-paced hustle of our everyday lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the endless cycle of responsibilities, commitments, and distractions. However, amidst the chaos, it’s vital to remember the importance of taking a step back, slowing down, and allowing ourselves time to reflect, rest, and recharge. Stepping back from the busyness of life is not a sign of weakness; rather, it’s a powerful act of self-care that can lead to huge benefits for our body, spirit, and soul.

In this blog post, we will explore the art of retreating and reflecting, and the transformative impact it can have on our lives.

1. Reflecting and Journaling

In the rush of life, we rarely take the time to pause and reflect. However, it is in these moments of stillness that we can gain insight, find clarity, and hear from God. Journaling is an excellent tool to aid in this process. One technique is to set an alarm for 5 or 10 minutes and write continuously for this time, whatever comes out. Even if you want to pause, keep on writing or scribbling whether it’s ‘lah de dah’ or ‘hmmmmm…hmmmmmm’ until the next words come. Allow your mind to completely unload. When done, you can ask God to show you what he wants to speak into your situation.

By journaling, you can also track your growth, revisit past challenges and answered prayers, and discern the path ahead. Take a break from technology and immerse yourself in the richness of pen, paper, and your connection with God.

2. Hearing from God in Nature

In the midst of our hectic lives, we might miss the gentle whispers of God through His creation. Take some time to step into nature more often, whether it’s in your garden, a park, or exploring a new walk. Natural surroundings can evoke a sense of awe and wonder, reminding us of the greatness of our creator God.

3. Resting and Recharging

Rest is not a luxury; it is a necessity for our well-being. Stepping back from our daily routines and embracing rest allows our bodies to heal, our minds to rejuvenate, and our souls to find peace in God. Retreats, whether in a serene countryside setting or just a few hours in a house with no distractions, can provide the perfect environment for rest and renewal. Unplug from the demands of technology and take time to read, rest, play, and recharge.

4. Moving Forward: Embracing Growth

Journaling, stepping out in nature, and retreating aren’t merely an escape; they’re stepping-stones for the rest of your life and the next step. Through reflection and rest, we can gain a fresh perspective on our lives and set new intentions for the future. By intentionally taking this time for yourself, you become better equipped to face life’s challenges with resilience and grace and through God’s eyes.
